Monospace Is a Personality: Why We Only Print Terminal Typography

I Hit My 5 Hour Limit t-shirt showing monospace terminal typography

Every design in this store is set in JetBrains Mono. There are no illustrations, no mascots, no distressed textures pretending the shirt has been through something. Text, spacing, and two colors of ink. This is not a budget decision. It is the whole idea.

Why monospace

Monospace is the typeface of things that are true. Log files, terminal output, stack traces — nobody sets a lie in monospace. When a message appears in fixed-width type, it reads as something the system said, not something a person is claiming. That is what makes it the right voice for these jokes: a shirt that says I hit my 5 hour limit in monospace isn't complaining. It's reporting.

Monospace is also, let's be honest, a personality. If you have ever had opinions about a terminal font, you know who you are. We know who you are too. That's why the store exists.

Two inks, chosen carefully

Dark garments get bone (a warm off-white); light garments get ink (a near-black). Not pure white, not pure black — the slightly softened versions that look like a phosphor terminal instead of a sticker. A muted gray and one alert orange survive on both grounds and carry the accents, like the highlight color in a status line.

The part nobody asked about

Each design starts as an SVG with rules strict enough to fail the build: one text element per line, baselines declared explicitly, letter-spacing in ems only. Text is converted to vector outlines before rendering, so no font substitution can ever mangle a design, and each shirt size gets its own render so the print lands at a true 300 DPI whether the garment is a Small or a 2XL — the same physical size on every shirt. The pipeline refuses to emit a file if the art drifts out of the safe area or the colorways come out different sizes. We treat the shirts like a deploy, because of course we do.

The catalog, currently

Three designs: 97% Usage, I Hit My 5 Hour Limit, and I've Reached My Context Limit. More are in the queue. All of them will be monospace. Some things you can rely on.
