The Five Stages of Getting Rate Limited

Grief researchers identified five stages. They were studying something else, but the framework transfers cleanly to the moment an AI assistant informs you, mid-sentence, that you have reached your usage limit.

1. Denial (1:47pm)

That's not right. You just started. You refresh the page. You refresh it again, the way you press an elevator button that is already lit. The message remains. The message always remains.

2. Anger (1:52pm)

You pay for this. You pay monthly. You compose a short speech about paying customers and deliver it to an empty room. The room, like the model, has stopped accepting input.

3. Bargaining (2:10pm)

Maybe a different browser. Maybe it's per-device. Maybe if the next session is very efficient — short prompts, no pleasantries, no thanking it (the thanking was costing tokens, probably) — the window will stretch. You draft a personal efficiency policy you will abandon within ninety seconds of regaining access.

4. Depression (2:30pm)

You open the file. The code is all still there, un-written. You remember that you used to do this part yourself, and that you were, at one point, considered good at it. The cursor blinks at a rate you can only describe as smug.

5. Acceptance (4:55pm)

You stand up. You drink water. You tell someone in your household what happened to you, and they nod without understanding. This is the stage we make clothing for: I Hit My 5 Hour Limit says it so you don't have to keep explaining, and 97% Usage is for those living permanently at stage zero — watching the bar fill, knowing, continuing.

The window reopens at 5:00pm. You are back at stage one by 5:04.
