What Is a Context Limit? A Short Explainer for People Who Love a Developer

I've Reached My Context Limit t-shirt in monospace typography

Perhaps someone in your life has started saying they have "reached their context limit" and then leaving the room. Perhaps they own a shirt that says so. This explainer is for you.

The technical part, quickly

An AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT can only hold so much conversation in its head at once. That working memory is called the context window, and it is measured in tokens — word-fragments, roughly three-quarters of a word each. Everything you have said, everything it has said, every file you pasted in: all of it has to fit. When it no longer fits, the model starts forgetting the beginning of the conversation, summarizing aggressively, or simply announces that the conversation has grown too long and stops.

There is no negotiating with this. The window is the window.

The human part

Here is the thing the joke understands: people also have context windows. Yours fills up too — with meetings, with Slack, with someone explaining their weekend in unnecessary detail. The difference is that when a machine hits its limit, everyone accepts it immediately. Nobody argues with the model. Nobody says "just push through." The machine gets a limit and the limit is respected.

The shirt simply requests the same courtesy. Four lines of monospace stating that capacity has been reached and no further input can be processed at this time. It is the most defensible way ever printed to leave a party at 9:15.

Who this is for

Developers, obviously. But also anyone whose social battery has a percentage on it: introverts, teachers in June, parents of toddlers, anyone who has ever gone quiet in a group chat for three business days. If they know what a context window is, the shirt is an inside joke. If they don't, it is still a clear and honest statement of fact.

It's printed on a Gildan 64000 Softstyle — 100% ring-spun cotton, runs true to size — in black or white, front print, direct-to-garment. You can see it here, and the rest of the catalog at unhinged.supply.
